Are you considering taking a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course? If so, you may be wondering which course is right for you. The 100, 120, and 150-hour online TEFL courses are the most popular options, and each has its own benefits.
Each course is completely hands-on, online, and asynchronous. This means you can still go to school or work full-time and complete the course at your own pace with zero in-class or in-person commitments.
Choosing Between The 100, 120, Or 150-Hour OISE TEFL Course
OISE TEFL courses were designed to be the perfect opportunity for those interested in a teaching job abroad. With the 100, 120, and 150-hour courses, you'll cover six core course units: introduction to English language teaching, teaching English language skills, adapting subject-specific content, structuring and delivering lessons, classroom management, and resources and materials. Each course has a lot in common, but here is how they differ:
100-Hour OISE TEFL Course
The 100-hour TEFL course is the shortest of the three options. It's designed for those who want to teach English abroad but don’t have much time to commit to a longer course. The course content covers the basics of teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language), such as teaching English grammar, pronunciation, and lesson planning. It also includes some basic teaching skills.
In the 100-hour course, you'll cover the core modules with no additional training or specializations. This is considered the minimum requirement for teaching abroad, but it might not be enough hours for some countries.
120-Hour OISE TEFL Course
The 120-hour TEFL course is the most popular option. It is designed for those who want to teach English abroad and have some teaching experience. The course covers the basics of teaching English, such as grammar, pronunciation, and lesson planning. It also includes more advanced teaching techniques, such as classroom management and lesson planning.
Coursework includes core modules and two chosen units of specialization (10 hours each) that have a special focus, like teaching Business English, teaching Young Learners, and teaching abroad. The TEFL 120-hour course is enough hours to teach English online and in most countries.
150-Hour OISE TEFL Course
The 150-hour TEFL training course is the longest of the three options. It's designed for those who want to be a TEFL teacher abroad and already have a lot of teacher training. The course materials cover the basics of teaching ESL, such as grammar, pronunciation, and lesson planning. It also includes more advanced teaching techniques, including classroom management, lesson planning, and teaching methodology.
This course covers the six core modules, two units of specialization (10 hours each), and three additional modules (10 hours each). If you want to be an ESL teacher, this is considered the gold standard of TEFL courses.
Choosing The Right Course To Get TEFL Certified
If you're looking to teach English abroad (or online), the 120-hour TEFL certificate is the way to go.
When choosing a TEFL course, think about what you actually want and need. The 100-hour TEFL might be best if you're after a short-term course, while the 120-hour or 150-hour TEFL courses are great for more comprehensive courses.
